Briggs Chevrolet NJ To Be Demolished
« on: November 05, 2005, 11:03:17 pm »

I just road by the old Briggs Chevrolet building in South Amboy, NJ and found it empty. It was occupied by Rural Metro Ambulance Service up until this past summer. The wrecking ball is scheduled to demolish the Briggs Dealership to  make way for redevelopment of the depressed waterfront area of South Amboy. Possibly to may way for a large transportation facility that has Ferry Boat service to NYC. I will try to get pics later this week to post on this topic. If anyone wants a brick from the old Dealership to keep as a memorial, I'll try to get a few once they start demolition.

Many of you guys may remember Briggs Chevrolet sponsored the 1970 World Champion SS/EA LS6 Chevelle Convertible driven by Ray Allen and prepared by Truppi-Kling Competition. They also sponsored Jungle Jim's Camaro F/C and Pro Stock Vega as well as the "Hemi Hunter" Top Fuel BBC Dragster and John Greenwood's SCCA Corvettes for some time.

Coincidently the Ray Allen LS6 Chevelle will be auctioned at Barrett-Jackson this coming Jan bringing Briggs Chevrolet back into the news just as the last brick is hauled to a landfill "somewhere in the swamps of Jersey". I think that is a verse from a Bruce Springsteen song. Hope Bruce doesn't mind. He is a car nut too.

Briggs sold many High Performance L78 Camaros, LS6 Chevelles  427-454 Corvettes, Novas and Vegas back in the musclecar era and modified and dyno tuned them just like Yenko, Berger and Motion did.

Briggs went out of business sometime in the 1980's I believe once the big Dealers moved to Rt 9 and Rt 35. It will be sad to see the building go but nothing can stop progress and redeveloment.

Hey....... if they can make a buck on the Yenko estate items, I may have a shot selling Briggs Chevrolet Bricks on Ebay.

I might even get a whole dump truck load and run them out to the Scottsdale  BJ Auction.  Might drive up the price on LS6 Convertibles??

Update 11/08/05

Went by the Briggs Dealership today to snap some pics. Gotta get a camara card reader and I'll try to post pics.

The buiding is still totally intact, but New Town Houses are on the way. Seems like the whole town is geting built up with major redevelopment.

Also went to the South Amboy Public Library and scored a copy of a Nov 5, 1970 News Paper article about the Briggs Chevrolet Drag Car winning the NHRA World Finals in Dallas

Allen set a new SS/EA record of 11.50 ET and won the S/S World Championship all in the same event.

They say the Chevelle made 625 HP.
The T/K Team earned $11,000 in Dallas that weekend of October 25, 1970.

Cool stuff

Old buildings like that should be refurbished.I heard the Yenko dealership was flooded this year.Wouldn't suprise me if it will go away in the future.

Tim;
I agree, the old history should be preserved, too much of it is going away bdue to "redevelopment". Pretty soon, all the history will be gone. Az is like that too, always in a hurry to do away with historical places because there is no money in old buildings.

One Brick?  You might be my first customer.

I'm triying to contact the town to see if I can walk through the building to check for items of interest. It hasn't been a Chevy dealer since the late 80's, so probably wont find much.

If you look at the pics above you see the older section was the new car showroom  of the Chevy Dealer probably built circa 1940? The section to the right is the service dept and appears to been built in the 1960's? It is actually in very good shape and is quite big inside, about 100'X80.'

There was a chassis dnyo in there somewhere. Probably gone or covered with concrete.

I'm going to try and locate the South Amboy Historical person to see if they have any pics of the Chevy Dealer from years  ago that would show new Chevrolets on the lot. Briggs was a major Performance Dealer in NJ from the mid 1960's til 1980's.

They modified brand new cars with Edelbrock Tarantula Intakes, Headers, Gear Swaps, Distributer Upgrades etc and Dyno Tuned to the customers needs. Briggs also sold performance parts over the counter.

They also had a Briggs High Performance parts truck that would drive over to Raceway Park on Sundays to sell parts directly to the Drag Racers. If you needed a new LS6, LS7, or LT-1 engine at the track you could get one off the truck and install it right in the pits.

The brick wall where my GMC is parked is where they shot the famous  magazine photo that shows Ray Allen's LS6 Chevelle Dragcar, Jungle Jim's Camaro F/C, The Hemi Hunter Chevy T/F Dragster and a few of Briggs 1971 new cars.  On the wall was "Briggs Diagnostic Center" and a Chevy Bowtie.
Wonder who got the sign?

Don that pic is from the Barrett-Jackson listing Lot #1287.  It is one of the best color pics available. Geoff Stunkard also has top quality images of this car taken at the Indy Nationals and Ontario Supernationals. See his website www.QuarterMilestones.com

Adam, Thanks for posting that pic. I have it in a few magazines, but no scanner.
I believe the men in the picture are Jim Donahue  (High Performance Manager) on the left and Danny Zack (Briggs Chevrolet owner) on the right. Briggs was also one of only 9 Ferrarri Dealers in the US in 1970.

I will provide digital pics of your very own "Briggs Chevrolet Brick" as is is plucked from the pile of rubble. I can  have certificates of authenticity made up and noterized by the  So. Amboy city clerk if neccessary.

427-king, your brick will be hand delivered through the picture window of your home if you'd like. Not responsible for broken glass. Grin

I'm not kidding about hand delivering your brick. Remember I know where you live. Only 2hrs north of Neptune and you'll never know when I'm coming! Angry

Plus another 8% buyers premium.  Can't believe the red LS-6 conv. went for so little.  That took some air out of the market.  The ZL-1 went very cheap as well.   Huh
